This training has both an online and an in-person component and participation in both is mandatory in order to receive credit for participating. Upon completion of this training and pending instructor approval, you will be qualified for three years to take Girl Scouts out on canoes at GSOSW properties and other flatwater locations deemed safe by the qualified individual.  

 

This course is a part of the Whispering Winds June Training Palooza and occurs at the same time as some other trainings that are being offered. Attendees should view this Training Palooza chart to confirm that they are not signing up for trainings that conflict with one another. If you've accidentally double-booked your time, please email answers@girlscoutsosw.org and we can help rearrange your training schedule. 

Participant Information 

  • This course does not include lifeguarding training or certification.
  • GSOSW volunteer trainings are adult, member-only and council-only, events. Please make other arrangements for your children.
  • Participants traveling to attend this training are welcome to stay overnight at the property the Friday evening before the training begins in addition to Saturday evening. After registering, please reach out to answers@girlscoutsosw.org to make arrangements. 
  • A confirmation email with additional details, including a packing list, will be sent a few days before the training. 

 

Online Portion 

A week prior to the training date you will be assigned the required online portion of the training through gsLearn. After you receive the assignment email from gsLearn, you will be able to log into your myGS account, click on gsLearn, and view the Small Craft Safety Training listed on your homepage. This course contains approximately one hour of training videos and a knowledge check. You will not be permitted to participate in the in-person training and skills test if you do not complete and pass all modules in the online course before 12:00pm the day prior to the in-person training.

 

In-Person Portion 

The in-person portion of the training will be held at Camp Whispering Winds and takes place from 9:00am on Saturday 6/1 to 1:00pm on Sunday 6/2. The in-person session requires strenuous physical activity. You will be in and out of the cold water during all outdoor components. Some of the skills include: Using clothing in the water to create a personal flotation device, swimming with and without a PFD, tipping and righting water craft in the water, paddling and solo navigating in the water.

Registration, Cancellation & Refund Information

Registration for this training closes on May 19, 2024. Request for cancellation/refund must be submitted via email to answers@girlscoutsosw.org by this date. No refunds will be given after the cancellation deadline.
If the number of registrants does not meet the required minimum by the cancellation deadline, the training will be cancelled and participants will be notified and fully refunded.
